Articles are words that mean the, a, one or some. In Spanish, articles have different endings for feminine, masculine, singular or plural, and they agree with the noun they accompany:
el hombre the man, la mesa the table, los libros the books, las novelas the novels
un hombre a man, una mesa a table, unos libros some books, unas novelas some novels
The article is, actually, the best way to find out the gender of a noun. El problema, for instance, is a masculine noun, even if it ends in a, and la mano, is a feminine noun ending in o.
